Greetings!

Greetings!

I'm Alex 👋🏽👽,

a software engineer that loves building practical systems to solve real problems and support creative work and personal growth. I currently contribute to the code and culture at Wellthy, a startup company with a mission to address the global caregiving crisis. Beyond just writing code or organizing towards a vibrant company culture of knowledge sharing, my core philosophy for engineering a fulfilling life is this:

“A strong foundation will set you free - build it with humility, intention, discipline, and compassion.”

Without humility, we are not open to learning. Without intention, we wander, and by definition, end up somewhere we didn’t intend. Without discipline, there is no focus to our energy - we "burn out" with not much to show for it.  (If it sounds like I’m speaking from personal experience, you’re right, but I’ll save that long story for a different time and space.) Without compassion, our journeys would likely be lonely, challenging, and lacking meaning.
☝🏽 That's the gist of the lessons I've learned in my 30-ish years living in this shared reality, anyway.

I’ll leave you with this tl;dr:

I am a lifelong learner. I write sensible code.  I act passionately and systematically on the belief that we all learn best and benefit most through sharing our knowledge, expertise, and broader life experiences. I love doing all the above with like-spirited people.

Here's my abridged story:

Let’s keep rolling with the theme of intention. I don’t think anyone can really possess the conviction of intention for their future without first acknowledging where they’ve been (in the past) and honestly assessing where they’re at (in the now). I’ll start with where I’ve been:

Before transitioning into my current career in tech, I graduated with a Master of Science in environmental health sciences and was writing reports and pushing spreadsheets at a consulting firm in Boston. I’ll spare you the details here, but it wasn’t for me. At the time, I didn’t have a clear vision of what was for me until an ill-fated romantic relationship brought me into the world of tech and rekindled a long-lost love for building things. I also strongly resonated with the idea of possessing the technical foundation to learn and leverage tech tools to build for my own life and enterprise. So from there, I focused my energy (with much intention and discipline) into the after-hours studies and immersive bootcamp-ing that would ultimately graduate me into the tech world as a junior developer.

*Cue anime training montage.*

Fast-forward to present day, after tens of thousands of lines of code pushed and countless blog posts and Youtube videos consumed, I have come to learn with some conviction that being an effective and high-leverage engineer (and human being) requires far more than knowing how to code well. Somewhere within my dramatic growth montage from junior developer to senior software engineer, I also lived quite a vibrant life outside of my professional duties wherein I met the love of my life (codenamed 641), maintained a long-distance relationship with her through the chaos of COVID, adopted and trained our forever dog (Seven), moved and integrated into a new local community (Fort Lee, NJ), and even competed in and won my first amateur kickboxing match. All that to say - I have traveled a sometimes unpredictable path, but along the way, found a through-line to success and growth in my commitment to continuously building upon a strong foundation of humble learning, intentional planning, and disciplined practice.

As for where I intend to go, I’ll allow room for some mystery and mystique,  but hope you’ll follow along and engage on my various media channels where I will continue to share learnings from my successes and failures on this journey to manifest and build my best life.
